It’s no exaggeration when they say it’s the most important meal of the day; and it has been named aptly – you are literally breaking your fast your body undertakes during the night with your morning meal. Most people tend to skip breakfast, because they were up late and they are rushing to get to work on time, because they’ve had too much to drink the previous night and their stomach rebels at the thought of food, or because they just cannot be bothered with food this early in the morning.

But, no matter what excuse you tend to cook up, you must eat breakfast, because:

  • It kick-starts your metabolism: When you eat breakfast, especially one that’s healthy (with more of cereals and fiber and less of oil, fat and sugar), you are helping your metabolism wake up after a night of rest. Only when your metabolism gets going, your body utilizes energy and calories effectively and keeps you energetic and active.
  • It helps you lose weight: When you skip breakfast, your metabolic rate decreases. And when this happens, you tend to gain weight even though you don’t eat much. The higher your metabolism, the more calories you burn even when sedentary. Eating a healthy breakfast helps you boost your metabolism and so lose more weight.
  • It prevents you from binging on unhealthy food: When you don’t eat breakfast, you feel hungry much before it’s time for lunch. And so you tend to binge on unhealthy snacks like donuts and chips and also end up drinking cups of coffee laden with sugar. This, besides wreaking havoc on your body, also causes you to put on weight. So while you are under the impression that skipping a meal will make you lose weight, skipping breakfast makes you pack on the pounds.
  • It provides you with energy: A healthy breakfast of oatmeal, orange juice, eggs, toast and other such options provides you with enough energy to get through the day. When you give breakfast a miss, you feel tired and lethargic throughout the day, and your work suffers as a result.
  • It helps burn more fat: Research has shown us that more fat is burned in the morning than later in the day. So eating a healthy breakfast and keeping your dinner to the bare minimum (fruits and a glass of milk maybe) is ideal for weight loss.

Don’t skip breakfast and watch your body reap the benefits.
